Stress is unavoidable in life, and it is important to find ways of self help to decrease and prevent stressful incidents and overcome our negative reactions to stress. When we don't look after ourselves we get sick. When we have a problem with our health it is even more important to find a way to really relax and be kind to ourselves.

To improve your time management:

  • Manage your commitments by not over - or undercommitting. Don't commit to what is not important to you.
  • Deal with procrastination by using a day planner, breaking large projects into smaller ones, and setting short-term deadlines.
  • Examine your thoughts to reduce conflict between what you believe and what your life is really like, between what is more important than you first thought and what has achieved an  exagerated importance.
     
    Keep a Journal

It is important that you identify your coping strategies. One way to do this is by recording a stressful event, your reaction and how you coped, in a journal. With this information, you can work on changing unhealthy coping strategies into healthy ones - those that help you focus on the positive and what you can change or control in your life.

Write your thoughts and philosophies.Write your misery; this allows you to express your pain without upsetting those you love. Write about the good days too. Write in one "thankyou" sentence everyday; such as "thank you for the sunrise", "thank you for the sweet tart taste of oranges", "thank you for my child's lovely smile"; then you can read and remember something happy when you are low.

Some behaviors and lifestyle choices affect your stress level. They may not cause stress directly, but they can interfere with the ways your body seeks relief from stress. Try to:

  • Balance personal needs, work, and family needs and obligations.
  • Have a sense of purpose in life, something to look forward to.
  • Get enough sleep as your body recovers from the stress while you are sleeping.
  • Eat a balanced diet for a nutritional defense against stress.
  • Get moderate exercise throughout the week.
  • Practice hypnotic trance or meditation in a quiet place for calm and self help.
  • Do at least one thing just for fun, each day.
  • Practice the 4 L's. Laugh. Love. Learn. Live.

Social support is the positive support you receive from your family, friends, pets and the community - your neighbors and work colleagues. It is the knowledge that we are cared for, loved, esteemed, and valued that makes us feel our life is important.
